The Catalyst support is one of the three major components in modern industrial catalysts. The roles of the support may include:
- Increase the effective surface area and provide suitable pore structure to improve reactivity and selectivity.
- Increase the mechanical strength to withstand stresses caused by pressure, temperature, phase transformation, etc.
- Increase the thermal stability to prevent aggregation and sintering so that the active components will stay dispersed.
- Provide acidic or basic sites needed for catalytic reactions.
- Form new compound with active component (such as solid solution) and change the activity of the catalyst.
- Increase the ability to withstand poisoning by either decomposing or adsorbing poisoning species.
- Reduce the amount of active component and lower the cost.
Major applications of PIDC’s high performance catalyst supports include:
Automotive & Diesel Catalysts - remove harmful emissions such as NOx and particulates from exhausts.
Fluid Cracking Catalysts - produce higher gasoline yields and reduce emissions for refineries.
Fuel Cell Catalysis – help fuel cells convert the chemical energy in a fuel directly into electrical energy.
