Oxygen storage materials can store or release oxygen depending on the conditions that the materials are in. They are an important component in automotive and other catalysts. In a three-way catalytic converter, the air-to-fuel ratio needs to be maintained within a narrow range to achieve high conversion efficiency for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and NOx simultaneously. However, since a typical gasoline engine runs with the air/fuel ratio oscillating in a certain range, an oxygen storage component is needed to counteract the effect of oscillating gas compositions in the exhaust by taking up oxygen during “lean burn” (high air/fuel ratio) and releasing oxygen during “rich burn” (low air/fuel ratio).
PIDC is developing oxygen storage materials with high oxygen storage capacity and excellent thermal stability.
